It would be a waste of the inter-pantheon surge to teleport straight there. Turning on the all-terrain mode, I navigated my way down the mountain. The funny thing was that I did find the road down that Zan must’ve used to drive up his Jeep. A mischievous part of my heart wanted to go up there and steal it anyway. Out of spite. It had nothing to do with sitting in the car surrounded by his scent, of course.

The heat was baking the road into puddles of mirage by the time I got to the city. The River Trail of the Truckee River curves around the inner sanctum of Downtown. Pots of flowers and charming benches mark its length. This was a great place for a date. That’s what people tell me, anyway. Maybe Tick was enjoying a beer at one of the restaurants that lined the water. Parking the truck along the street, I followed the trail to where the red blinking dot had pointed me.

A splash and a scream echoed from the riverbank. It didn’t seem to attract the attention of an old lady who was walking her poodle along the trail. That was all kinds of weird. I bolted to the source of the noise and drew out my gun as I ran. Before I could judge the old lady for her callousness, I saw a ripple of an illusion shrouding the shallow water of where the water thinned over shallow rock. Three freakishly big horses were stomping around. Water splashed up their green hides. Kelpies. What were they doing this far from their lakes? Shouting and neighing erupted, and I quickened my pace.

A person of medium height and orange hair was the source of the commotion. They fell back and forth, trying to defend themselves. I didn’t see a weapon, but a shimmer in the air seemed to help them along. It was too far to see. What I did see was the bright red blood running down their face and disappearing into the collar of their poncho.

Tick wasn’t enjoying a beer. They were getting the shit kicked out of them.

The kelpies herded their prey away from the shore. I looked past the green-black hides and saw that the water elementals weren’t trying to kill the demon spawn outright. They were doing what they loved most—drowning the culprit in deeper water. Another monster would’ve been satisfied with just hoofing their prey to death. But kelpies harvest soul power from the waters. Once you were pushed into the depths, you didn’t come out.

Tick and I realized that at the same time. The red-haired trickster was cornered, and I didn’t blame them when the color drained from their face. What had they done to piss the water demons off to this staggering degree? The Reno kelpies knew all too well what happened to those who broke the Spiral’s laws and drowned anyone who even passed for a human. The reminder was pumping water in the walkway between Circus Circus and Silver Legacy.
